Q. I have been told that back to back breedings are actually safe for a bitch. What are your feelings on this and if you agree at what age do you feel the first breeding is best planned? !
A. “Dr Hutchinson: I normally suggest the first breeding after 2 years of age because that is when the health clearances are done. The reasoning behind this is, according to Dr. Hutchinson, because progesterone production in a bitch over six years old is waning.”
I recently had to bottle feed a Frenchie puppy and found that my mini crock pot did a great job of warming the bottles. I would leave it on all day so it was ready at any time . I used a digital meat thermometer set at 100 degrees . Worked great- no guessing. I also used a mini bottle. The kind you give babies medicine in. Regular size nipple but only holds 15 mls of formula so you know exactly how much the puppy is getting. Less wasted formula.

Dramatic Symptoms: Brandi, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Los Angeles, was accidentally exposed to her owner’s hormone replacement therapy skin cream for a year beginning at 3 months of age. Recovery took a year following end of exposure. All breeds are susceptible.Photos courtesy of Dr. Lisa Pope, Stevenson Ranch Veterinary Center. The spreading popularity of topical hormone treatments in people — especially but not exclusively menopausal women — is having unintended medical consequences for the users’ pets.

From a customer point of view: Please, don’t choose a Vet simply because they are convenient for your dogs. Research, ask fellow dog breeders and owners; ask local (if your lucky enough to have one) Vet School for recommendations. The retired Dean of Purdue told me the Vet I used in Indiana was the most talented student he had while associated with the Vet School. Based on my experience, I would agree with him!
